Everton Loans Recap: Dowell and Connolly bag goals

We start off the recap with a player who doesn’t score too many goals, but has discovered his shooting boots in recent weeks.

Everton have been using Callum Connolly as a fullback and he even played at left back in relief of Leighton Baines during the preseason. He started the season with the Under-23s where David Unsworth then moved him to centre back. Before the transfer deadline though, he was sent out on loan to Ipswich Town. He played 90 minutes at right back for the Blues in his very first game, and since then has been used exclusively as a defensive midfielder where he has done well.

Connolly scored his third goal of the season (all in the last three weeks, all in the first seven minutes of the games) over the weekend against Reading, setting his team on the way to a 2-0 win.

He dedicated his goal to long time Ipswich Town training ground caretaker and academy kitman Dick Parker, who did a lot to help Connolly settle down when he moved to the Blues this summer.

Another prodigious goalscorer also bagged one this weekend, with the new Sheriff of Nottingham Forest Kieran Dowell scoring his eighth goal of the Championship season.

Joe Williams starred again for Barnsley as they held Brentford to a 0-0 draw. The 21-year-old had the most touches and the most tackles in his side from his midfield pivot role.

Tyias Browning was part of a five-man backline as Sunderland finally won a game, beating Fulham 1-0. Brendan Galloway was on the bench and did not feature.

Left back Antonee Robinson was a key figure for the Trotters with over a hundred touches of the ball, and has been a breath of fresh air for a Bolton Wanderers side that’s languishing in the relegation zone.

Henry Onyekuru was held quiet after he came on in the second half for Anderlecht, who were hammered 5-0 by the league leaders Club Brugges who extended their lead over the third-placed side to thirteen points.
