Unsworth to meet with Moshiri on Friday

Everton put in a much-improved performance in the second half but were unable to overcome an early goal from Chelsea, losing 2-1 and getting eliminated from the Carabao Cup at the Fourth Round stage earlier today.

After the game, caretaker manager David Unsworth spoke about his side’s performance, and said he was encouraged by how they ended the game.

"Nobody likes losing games, I'm a bad loser but I have to say I'm proud of the performance, they were terrific. We are disappointed to lose, we think we had chances to get something from the game.

"We knew James McCarthy could only play for 60 minutes so we were always going to change things then. We limited Chelsea and then opened it up. We were camped in the Chelsea half, there is loads to work on.

"It was a committed performance. Hopefully we'll show that in every game I am in charge, starting with Leicester City on Sunday."

Youngster Beni Baningime made a surprise debut after joining the senior squad training yesterday, and was impressive as well in the holding midfielder role.

"Being honest, Beni wasn't in the team last night, but Morgan became ill. I didn't think Beni would be as good as he was! I'm proud.

“Evertonians better get used to his tackling.”

His latter comment was in reference to the thunderous tackle he put in in the second half, following it up with a delicate dribble that seemed to spark a revival in the Blues.

The interim gaffer was also asked about his future at the position, but he didn’t add much beyond what we had already heard previously that he would have four games to begin with.

"I'm due to meet with Farhad Moshiri on Friday afternoon, but I speak with the chairman (Bill Kenwright) three or four times a day.

"I can only influence tonight, the training sessions and the games moving forward. I wouldn't want to comment on what's gone before."
