Tottenham set to trigger one year contract extension for Erik Lamela

It’s apparently contract day at Cartilage Free Captain. Toby Alderweireld is getting all the discussion, but it looks like there be another player who extended his stay at Tottenham Hotspur for at least one more season.

ESPN is reporting that Spurs are considering triggering a one-year extension of Erik Lamela’s contract that would keep him at the club until 2020. Lamela signed his original contract in 2013 as a four year deal with an option for an additional two years. Spurs already triggered that two year extension, which takes him through 2019. And apparently there’s another trigger for a final year.

But hold up — football.london is reporting that not only are Spurs interested in that one year extension, but they’ve already triggered it. I’m not sure which one is accurate, so we’ll just have to hold that in tension for now. Either way, he’s here for at least another season, and possibly two.

Lamela’s long-term injury has probably hindered his ability to pick up an entirely new contract, so this extension feels like Spurs hedging their bets a bit on Lamela. It kicks the can down the road in case Lamela happens to pick up another injury or if Spurs discover that he’s just not the same player that he was pre-hip surgery. I don’t know if that’s the case, but it makes sense from a financial standpoint, and Lamela just seems happy at the club and just wants to play football. Who knows — Spurs can probably offer him a new deal at any point if they want to; this just gives them some breathing room.
