WATCH: highlights of Tottenham’s 1-0 League Cup win over Barnsley

Unless you were in Wembley Stadium tonight (and I’m sure more than a few of you were!) you didn’t get to watch Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 win over Barnsley in the third round of the Carabao Cup. It might be just as well — all indications were that it wasn’t the best of matches, though it did give attendees a chance to see Juan Foyth and Tashan Oakley-Boothe make their full Tottenham debuts, and also witness the return of Georges-Kevin N’Koudou from a long-term injury.

But never fear, my friends! We have the highlights!

There’s no commentary on these (why would there be, there were no commenters), and it can be difficult at times to know exactly what was going on. But based on what I gleaned from the radio feed and these highlights, here are a couple of minor observations:

Juan Foyth looks like he’s got some potential, but he’s still super raw. That shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone: he’s 17, playing in his first match in England. Reports were he looked surprisingly composed, though he had a couple of oopsie-doopsie moments where he got beat one-on-one by grown-ass Barnsley players. He had a nice header at goal which you can see in the above highlights.

Barnsley probably should’ve had a goal. The headed corner about 40 seconds into those highlights shows a Barnsley player with a free header on goal, and Spurs should probably call themselves lucky that he wasn’t able to get that one on target.

Trippier’s cross for Dele’s goal was nicely placed, but possibly a bit lucky. Trippier reportedly had a couple of decent crosses from the right flank, though the assist to Dele Alli looked to me more like a “poke it at the middle and hope someone’s there” variety. Dele made a nice run to them middle to find space for his shot.

Llorente didn’t seemingly do a lot to inspire confidence. His header on goal should’ve been a bit better but if my take on the radio feed is correct, he also didn’t do a whole lot in this game. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. I hope I am... he’s been pretty underwhelming thus far. What if he’s crocked?

"In the end yes, it was a tough game, I want to congratulate Barnsley, they defend very well. It was a tough game. It was difficult to create chances. We could not shoot on target for the first 60 minutes. That speaks well about the work of our opponent.

"Michel Vorm deserves praise because his save at the beginning of the second half; he kept us alive. In the way he works it’s fair to recognise his value and congratulate him.

"The performance was good. There are a lot of positive things to take. Then the opportunity to go to the next stage. We have achieved that and we’re happy.”
