Tottenham announce signing of keeper Paulo Gazzaniga from Southampton

More team news, and a new signing! Tottenham Hotspur announced today that it has reached an agreement with Southampton for the transfer of goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga. The transfer fee and terms were not disclosed.

Gazzaniga becomes the second signing of this transfer window, after Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez (whose transfer is not yet OFFICIAL-official pending obtaining a work permit). Ostensibly, Gazzaniga is now Spurs’ third goalkeeper behind Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm, and is the break-glass-in-case-of-emergency option between the sticks.

Spurs have been without a third keeper since Pau Lopez returned to Spain and Luke McGee was sold to Portsmouth. It was thought that Spurs might go with youth team keepers Brandon Austin or Alfie Whiteman instead, which would’ve saved the club some cash, but whatever. Unless Vorm walks this summer (which seems unlikely) Gazzaniga probably won’t be playing a whole lot of first team minutes for Spurs this season. However, his contract is a long term one, through 2022, which implies that Spurs sees Gazzaniga as the long-term backup to Hugo.

Interestingly, the Argentine Gazzaniga is from the same hometown of Pochettino, and Poch knows him from his years managing Southampton. His nickname is, of course, Gazza.
