Alderweireld out with hamstring injury in Tottenham win over Real Madrid

Spurs may have gotten a big win over the European champions, but it didn’t come without a cost.

What a match! Tottenham Hotspur had another “glory, glory night” in European competition at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday, putting in a complete performance and dominating Real Madrid, winning 3-1.

But the victory didn’t come without a cost. Starting center back Toby Alderweireld pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury midway through the first half and was subbed off for Moussa Sissoko. Toby sustained the injury while dribbling forward into the Madrid box before stopping his run and clutching the back of his right thigh.

Afterwards, Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that Toby pulled his hamstring, but didn’t give any further details.

“He felt something in his hamstring. After tomorrow we will assess him. Sure for Sunday it's difficult, but we'll see after we assess him in the next few days.”

After the match, Toby tweeted, confirming that he’s injured and that it could be a while before we see him suit up for Tottenham again.

#hamstringsOUT! The good news is that Spurs are as healthy as they’ve been all season, so losing Toby for a few weeks might not be the worst thing that could happen. It means Eric Dier will drop back into defense, like what he did today to great effect.

Spurs play against Crystal Palace this weekend and then have a week off for the international break, so that’ll be a good opportunity for Toby to recuperate. The emergence of Harry Winks and the return of Mousa Dembele mean that Spurs aren’t in a central midfield crisis, freeing Eric Dier to drop back as a CB. However, the sooner Victor Wanyama returns to the fold the better. Still, games will come thick and fast in November and December, so don’t be surprised if Juan Foyth starts getting some decent rotation minutes.

In other injury news, both Ben Davies and Hugo Lloris appeared to pick up knocks against Madrid as well, but neither were subbed off and both seem to be okay. We’ll be tracking both of them, however, in the coming days.
