When Benjamin Mendy went down with a knock on his right knee and was forced to leave Manchester City’s Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Saturday, it seemed like it was just a knock and the Frenchman wouldn’t be out for long.

But turns out it might not be just a knock and Mendy will be out for long. According to Sam Lee of Goal, Mendy has traveled to Barcelona to meet Dr. Ramon Cugat, a specialist trusted by Pep Guardiola was has treated many players since Pep took over at City.

The report says that City’s medical staff fears Mendy could have suffered ligament damage in his knee, and if that’s the case he’ll undergo surgery and would miss several months of action, returning only in 2018 for the final months of this season.

This is obviously horrible news because Mendy has made an incredible impact since arriving, and City are obviously very short in the full-back position. Pep has used Fabian Delph and Danilo at left-back, but they’re not as a dangerous as Mendy and Guardiola will need to think hard about how to adjust his system to deal with Mendy’s absence.

Hopefully the tests don’t bring terrible news, but this is Manchester City so expect Mendy to miss quite a long time. What a shame.
