Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admitted victory at Crystal Palace was vital in his side’s challenge for the Premier League’s top four.

The Gunners moved up to third in the table after first-half goals from Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud helped secure a 2-1 victory but Wenger’s men were made to work had for all three points by a spirited Palace side.

And with 12 matches to go until the end of the season, Wenger believes consistency will play a key role in the race for Champions League qualification.

Arsene Wenger targets the Champions League after Arsenal entered the top four with an important win against a difficult Palace side.

“It will be down to consistency,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

“Everybody will fight for it. You have six or seven teams who will fight for these positions and that’s why the three points were important for us today.”

In what was a difficult afternoon for Arsenal Wenger had plenty of praise for Crystal Palace as they tested Arsenal’s resolve right until the final whistle.

Substitute Glenn Murray pulled a goal back for the hosts deep into injury time and could have levelled things up right at the death, but his header smacked against the foot of the post.

Oliver Giroud was pleased to score his fiftieth Arsenal goal to help Arsenal claim a Champions League place.

Wenger added: “Palace gave absolutely everything. We had a real cup game today and they closed us down, stopped us from playing and we had to fight and to play.

“We managed to do it in patches but not through all the 90 minutes. It was a tough game.

“When we came out of pressure we looked dangerous. Maybe we were fortunate to be 2-0 up but it is the kind of game you have to take your chances.

“We had a good chance with Sanchez and a few other opportunites where we missed a cross but Crystal Palace played well.”

Arsenal’s focus now shifts from domestic to European matters with Monaco the visitors to the Emirates on Wednesday night in the Champions League last 16.

Wenger revealed he will wait and see before deciding whether to make any changes but the returning Jack Wilshere has a chance of being involved.

Alan Pardew believes that despite losing to Arsenal, it was the best performance he had seen from his side since he rejoined the club.

“I will have to see how everyone recovers,” the Frenchman said.

“We have a few knocks and bruises. I have to study Monaco as well to see if I will change but that will be decided later.

“It’s a bit early for him (Jack Wilshere) but he works hard. He’s been out for four months and straight into a Champions League game is difficult. but he will be with us.

“He can certainly play part of the game if needed.”
