The Telegraph asked their new football columnist Jamie Carragher to pick the eleven Premier League players who have impressed him the most in 2017 so far.

The former Liverpool defender picked three Tottenham players: Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Harry Kane.

On Alderweireld and Vertonghen, Carragher writes: “I think Alderweireld last season was the outstanding centre-back. Alongside him his mate wasn’t far behind him, Vertonghen. A great defensive record under Mauricio Pochettino.”

He goes on to explain why he picked Kane from a high quality group of Premier League strikers.

“It’s not easy in the Premier League with competition from Romelu Lukaku, Alvaro Morata, Sergio Aguero, but I am going to go for Harry Kane. We are three or four years in now and I think we will be saying the same thing in 10 years time about him being the main striker in the Premier League.”

Carragher chose Philippe Coutinho over Christian Eriksen. In fairness, he is a Liverpool fan, but for my money Eriksen has been the best attacking midfielder in the Premier League in 2017.
