When Harry Kane puts in performances like he did against APOEL Nicosia in the Champions League on Tuesday, you can understand why Tottenham made him the club’s highest earner last season.
The striker makes in excess of £100,000-a-week at Spurs – only captain Hugo Lloris is thought to be on a similar salary.
But according to one report, Kane’s Tottenham teammates believe the 24-year-old shouldn’t have accepted those terms.
The Times’ deputy football correspondent Matt Hughes writes:
The view of some of his team-mates is that Kane’s acceptance of a modest contract has suppressed their own wages, as in discussions with Levy their representatives have little argument when he states that Kane deserves to be the highest paid player at the club and is happy with his lot.
If nothing else asking for a pay-rise would keep his team-mates onside.
This sounds like speculative murmurings to me. But if there is any truth in it, then I think the concerned players in question should be blaming themselves rather than Kane.
A number of those players have agreed new contracts over the last year or so, and it’s not like they were forced to do so.
Obviously, many of them could be earning a lot more elsewhere. But they agreed to their current terms and clubs will expect them to honour those agreements.
That said, I wouldnt be surprised to see Kane sign yet another new, improved contract this season. That could set off a chain reaction of wage increase requests from the rest of the squad.
