Andre Gomes’ move to Tottenham broke down on deadline day because Barcelona decided not to sell the midfielder, according to ESPN.

The Portugal international emerged as a potential alternative to Ross Barkley earlier in the week. West Ham had been favourites to sign Gomes on a season-long loan until Spurs swooped.

Gomes was believed to be close to joining Tottenham permanently on deadline day, but the move didn’t materialise.

ESPN claims Barcelona decided against selling the 24-year-old in the end. I assume the Catalan club would have let Gomes leave had they signed Philippe Coutinho.

  1. To be fair Paulinho was turd for us, but he has been excellent for Brazil everytime I’ve seen him.. he was also great for Corinthians! His hat-trick against Uruguay in the recent qualifiers was outstanding.. you shouldn’t always judge a player by one clubs performances.. otherwise Diego Forlan would be a useless failure due his time at UTD.

  2. Paulinho started well for Spurs, though that’s never mentioned nowadays, but eventually his performances declined rather as he and fellow Brazilians were unimpressive in the World Cup in Brazil several years ago when eventually they were humiliated by Germany. I can well believe that he has performed well enough since his time playing in China, to impress Barcelona. He’s not the only player to have had up-and-down periods at various clubs.
