Harry Redknapp has been reunited with midfielders Sandro and Niko Kranjcar but Queens Park Rangers failed in their deadline day attempt to add a striker after deals fell though for both Fabio Borini and Jermain Defoe.

Sandro and Kranjcar had both previously worked with Redknapp at Tottenham, with QPR agreeing a £10 million deal on Monday to sign Sandro permanently.

QPR had also been attempting to conclude a deal for Defoe from Toronto, although chairman Tony Fernandes admitted that Redknapp would have to wait until January to sign his attacking replacement for Loïc Rémy.

Toronto ultimately blocked the proposed deal, while QPR’s move for Borini fell down over the Italian’s wage demands after a £10 million fee had been agreed with Liverpool.

Of Borini, who was believed to want around £90,000-a-week, Fernandes said: “I think players’ expectations, agents’ expectations, people have to be a bit realistic. We are not going to be silly about what we do.” Fernandes, though, is far more optimistic on the possibility of resurrecting the Defoe deal.

“There’s a will on both sides to do something,” said Fernandes. “If it’s not now maybe in January it will happen. Harry feels we have enough in terms of strikers. We have Adel [Taarabt]. I think he will be something special throughout the season. Bobby [Zamora] is getting fitter and we have Charlie [Austin]. The key was strengthening the defence and midfield. We feel we have enough up front. It’s been a good transfer window for us.”

QPR had always hoped to add two midfielders and a strikeron Monday but an expected deal for Lassana Diarra fell through following his departure from Lokomotiv Moscow.

Redknapp had been sufficiently confident on Saturday to say that Diarra had already signed but the disappointment over that deal was partially offset by the arrivals of both Sandro and Kranjcar.

“I signed Sandro at Tottenham, I love him - he was fantastic player for me,” said Redknapp. Sandro added: “I’m delighted to have joined QPR and look forward to working with Harry Redknapp again.”

Sunderland made up for the disappointment of missing out on Borini with the signing of the Argentina international Ricky Álvarez from Inter Milan. Álvarez has joined on a season’s loan after Borini repeatedly refused to consider a return to Wearside, despite the two clubs agreeing a fee of £14  million for him almost two months ago.

Sunderland have agreed an option to buy Álvarez for £9 million. Gus Poyet, the Sunderland manager, has also managed to bring in the centre-back he wanted in the shape of Liverpool’s Sebastián Coates.
