Everton manager Ronald Koeman says he is not worried about his future after a disappointing start to the season and has rejected the claim he spent £150 million to rebuild his squad over the summer.

Koeman joined the legion of managers adopting the ‘net spend’ argument to diminish the scale of transfer outlay, arguing the sum paid on 10 new players was offset by the £75 million received for Romelu Lukaku’s sale to Manchester United.

“Even in Holland, they say: ‘Oh they spent £150m, look how they play...’ Yeah, but we lost players and we spent £45m,” said Koeman.

“Why do you always speak about £150m? £150m was four years ago £25m. If Lukaku had been sold after Neymar, then maybe Lukaku would have been £130m. It is not about money.”

Koeman’s side is short of confidence and dynamism, although they are searching for a third win in four home games against Burnley this weekend. Discontent is growing at Goodison as hopes the club can challenge the top four this season look increasingly doubtful.

“I am not worried about my future because I believe in myself and the players,” said Ronald Koeman.

“If the club makes another decision it is up to the club. If I am worried about my situation, how can you live? Enjoy life. I was sh*t after yesterday (Thursday), but now I am different.

“I can be emotional and frustrated. I like to continue and I like to finish the contract, but I am not worried. If you are worried in this job, there is no life. There are 20 Premier League clubs, 20 managers and maybe 13 managers worried every day about their job.

“If I am not good enough, they will take another one. That is how I see this situation.

“I do my best. I live 24-hours for football and to make Everton a better team and to win more games. I cannot do more. If it is not good enough, it is not good enough but that is my experience. It happens to everybody; Ancelotti, Van Gaal, Mourinho.

“I will fight every second of the day to make the team better and to make the right choices and of course everyone can have their opinion. If you don’t win, you have problems.”
