Spurs vs Chelsea, player ratings: Who impressed and who flopped at Wembley?

Willian

Spurs (4-2-3-1)

Lloris 5

Completely helpless with the first Alonso goal but should have saved the second with his eyes closed.

Trippier 6

One trademark run and cross second half which Kane should have made more of.

Alderweireld 5

Alarmingly outpaced by Morata in the seventy second minute, but the Spaniard let him off poor first half marking with a bad miss.

Vertonghen 5

Little to cope with as Chelsea retreated to defend their lead, but got caught out with Alderweireld for the early Morata chance and was lucky to only be booked for second half foul on Moses.

Davies 6

Couldn't break Chelsea down offensively, defensively he made a key tackle on Willian as he threatened to run right through Spurs on the hour.

Victor Wanyama

Wanyama 5

As Chelsea surrendered all attacking ambition second half, seemed a little bit overkill to have both him and Dier out there as long as Tottenham did.

Dembele 7

The most effective Spurs attacker, beating Chelsea's crowded set up through powerful running and determination.

Dier 6

Brutal first half lunge through Luiz and Moses summed up his frustration in a suffocated Spurs midfield. Removed in the second half so Son could be added to the attack but actually that just opened things up for Willian to come into the game.

Alli 5

A peripheral figure, which owes much to Chelsea's set up and Conte's plan, and goes a long way to explaining why Spurs came up short.

Eriksen 7

One undefendable free kick in the first half should have brought a goal for his side. Another in the second did the job, though it needed a Chelsea player to get the final touch.

Kane 6

August drought continued with Courtois denying him twice and the post once in the first half. Got some change out of Rudiger but overall it just wasn't his day.

Subs

Son 6

Introduced for Dier midway through the second half to add weight to the attack.

Sissoko 4

Stop me if you've heard this one before - completely anonymous. Winning goal came down his side.

Janssen N/A

Introduced with a minute to go to try and salvage something.

Not Used - Vorm, Wimmer, Winks, Walker-Peters.

Chelsea (5-4-1)

Courtois 7

Nervous fumble of an early Kane shot, but better under later pressure and very strong under a barage of crosses and corners.

Azpilicueta 6

Caught trying to nip in and pinch the ball a couple of times, including for Kane hitting the post.

Christensen 7

Second half block on Kane part of a stubborn defensive display full of headers, tackles and chucking bodies in the way.

Rudiger 5

Looked uncomfortable under heavy pressure and Kane deliberately targeted him for it. Picked up a cheap booking.

Moses 6

Much more defensive work than offensive but went close with a second half shot from an angle.

Kante 7

Absolutely ideal for these hard-working, backs-to-the-wall efforts. Helped crowd the midfield area which kept Alli out of the game.

Luiz 7

Used in a midfield role and won the free kick for Alonso's goal. Allowed Eriksen to run in behind him a couple of times and was booked for pulling him back when it happened on a third occasion. Great tackle to deny Dier in first half stoppage time and a crucial bit of play to win them the game with three left.

Alonso 8

Man of the match. Six goals last season and a peach of a first for 2017/18 with a blistering first half free kick. Lloris should have saved the second but to be that far forward, that late, from left back after all that went before showed great energy.

Willian 8

Just about the only Chelsea player who posed an attacking threat for a lot of the second half, running at Spurs and causing problems. Came within a whisker of scoring with shot that struck the post.

Bakayoko 6

Still carrying an injury apparently - if so, a decent introduction to Premier League life in an energy-sapping performance. Needs to learn about giving cheap free kicks away in bad areas late in games.

Morata 5

Missed an easy header after five minutes and struggled to make any impact as Chelsea turned entirely to defence after taking the lead.Several important defensive headers when back for set pieces.

Subs

Batshuayi 5

Scored an own goal with his first touch, which isn't ideal however good the quality of the free kick was from Eriksen.

Pedro 6

Came on as part of a hold onto what we have mission, ended up involved in an unlikely win.

Not used: Caballero, Kenedy, Musonda, Tomori, Scott.
