Dennis Bergkamp's elegant turn and finish at St James' Park has been voted the best goal in 25 years of Premier League football.

More than half a million fans voted in a BBC Sport poll to mark Tuesday's anniversary, and the former Arsenal man edged out Tony Yeboah's spectacular volley at Wimbledon by just two percent of the vote. Five goals were shortlisted from five, five-year eras between 1992 and 2017.

Wayne Rooney's acrobatic overhead kick in Manchester United's 2011 victory over neighbours Manchester City came third, followed by Thierry Henry's slalom through Tottenham in 2002 and Jack Wilshere's memorable finish to an exquisite piece of Arsenal combination play against Norwich in 2013.

Fans will be treated on Tuesday night to re-run of the Premier League era's first Match of the Day of the Premier League era, hosted by Des Lynam alongside Gary Lineker and Alan Hansen, on BBC Red Button and the BBC Sport website at 10pm.

For the even more committed, Sheffield United v Manchester United, the game in which the first Premier League goal was scored, will be replayed in its entirety online with live text commentary and goal-flashes from the 3pm kick-offs from 1992.

Bergkamp's goal arguably surpassed previous masterpieces against Leicester City and Argentina, gathering a Robert Pires pass with his back to goal and turning Nikos Dabizas with one flick of his left foot before sliding past Shay Given with his right.

“I want the pass from Pires to my feet, but it comes behind me,” Bergkamp later wrote in his autobiography Stillness and Speed. “It’s not what I expect, so I think: I need another idea here.

“It’s the all-or-nothing part of my game. I could have gone for the safe way, control the ball and knock it back. Or maybe turn. But I know the defender is stepping in, and the pace of the ball can help me. Ten yards before the ball arrived I made my decision: I’m going to turn him.”
