Arsenal 1 Sevilla 2: Alexandre Lacazette gets off the mark to help retain Emirates Cup despite defeat

If only winning the Premier League was as simple as retaining the pre-season Emirates Cup which Arsenal managed to do on Sunday despite losing to Sevilla, the only team in the competition to win both their games.

Arsène Wenger’s strong Arsenal side lost 2-1 to Sevilla but a rule which counted goals scored among the overall points tally meant that the home team just edged the competition. Both clubs finished with a cumulative points and goals total of nine, and were tied on goal difference, but the fact that six of Arsenal’s points came from goals scored meant that, under the Emirates rules, they retained their stadium and shirt sponsor’s pre-season competition title.

The new club record £52.7 million signing Alexandre Lacazette scored on his first start at the Emirates with Wenger fielding a completely different XI to the side that had beaten Benfica 5-2 the previous day.

There was a steady performance from the 17-year-old academy boy Joe Willock in a deep-lying midfield position where the teenager did his best to keep things simple. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain played in the left wing back position in the first half and on the opposite side after the break, and was arguably Arsenal’s most effective attacking player.

It was a burst down the wing from the Englishman that set up a chance for Hector Bellerin which the Spanish wing-back should have scored from in the first half, and after the break, Oxlade-Chamberlain made the goal for Lacazette, cutting back to him in the area for a simple finish. Danny Welbeck also looked sharp in the first half and his direct running caused Sevilla problems, although his finishing was erratic.

Mohamed Elneny started at centre-back in the centre of Wenger’s remodelled back three which was unable to prevent a nice move finished by Joaquin Correa at the start of the second half for Sevilla’s first goal. The former Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City midfielder Steven N’Zonzi scored with a beautifully struck left foot shot to win the game for Sevilla although not, as it turned out, the Emirates Cup.

Arsenal win the Emirates Cup

For the fifth time which, given they lost a game, Sevilla won both theirs, is a bit of a swizz in anyone's book. Quest has actually abruptly turned to Wheeler Dealers with the rotund ticket and his long chum. Thanks for your company. We'll have a match report imminently.

And with that Quest returns to furniture restoration. There must be a metaphor in that somewhere.

90+2 min

Arsenal corner when Pareja tackles Ozil who was on the end of a loopy left-foot pass in the box from Monreal. But it comes to naught.

90+1 min

Ozil and Iwobi take their time to pick the moment to work in a left-wing cross that eventually Rico, the sub keeper, grasps.

89 min

Some Arsenal fans are departing even though, because of yesterday's 5-2, they will win the cup, I think, if it stays as it is.

88 min

Bramall saves the day with a run in from the left to cut out a Fernandez pass that would have put Ganso through on Cech.

87 min

Bramall feeds a pass in frome the left to meet Ramsey's run. He takes a touch to move it to the right a yard then wraps his foot around it, aiming to bend it around Pizzaro and in at the right post but again he doesn't get enough curl on it.

85 min

Arsenal free-kick for a shove on Walcott, right of centre, 40 yards out. Ozil takes and bends it straight down David Soria's throat.

83 min

And then a corner from his cross. Ozil takes on the left, aiming for Welbeck. N'Zonzi wins it but Ozil, ghosting into the box on the left is played in from the edge for a cross that hits the first defender.

81 min

Walcott spins Lenglet but can't get a decent cross in after a neat pass from Xhaka. Iwobi picks up possession on the left and goes again, freeing Bramall to attack up the touchline but he has to settle for a throw-in.

79 min

Oxlade-Chamberlain bursts through again on the right but has no options when he runs out of steam so Sevilla mop up the ball and go forward.

77 min

Arsenal subs - Walcott and Iwobi on for Elneny and Lacazette. Don't know what formation they're going to play now.

76 min

Oxlade-Chamberlain has Lenglet on toast again, storming past him on the outside before cutting a cross back for Ozil that Pizzaro intercepts and sends upfield for Correa. Lacazette is limping and Walcott is warming up with his new Pasadenas haircut. Right on, right on, right on.

75 min

Krohn-Delhi plays a fine inside-out pass to Montoya hurtling down the right but Monreal manages to smother his space and forces him back.

73 min

Sevilla sub - Carrico off for Pizarro.

71 min

Cross from the left hits Ramsey on the back of the head and balloons towards goal. He tries to get there before David Soria to exploit the fortuitous bounce but can't get there quick enough.

Goal!!

Arsenal 1-2 SevillaCorrea taps it across to N'Zonzi who woofs a left-foot shot from 22 yards inside Cech's left post. It was like a sand-wedge, dinked over and around the obstacle.

68 min

Correa sweeps a cross through the box for Mercado who sends it straight back ...

65 min

Oxlade-Chamberlain slides in to stop a pass reaching Correa but Sevilla regroup and Ben Yedder slips a pass into the box on the left for Ganso who spanks a shot over the bar. On goes the Mexican wave. And on. And on.

64 min

The fans are giving it large with a Mexican wave. That's my fun day.

GOAL!!

Arsenal 1-1 Sevilla (Lacazette)Oxlade-Chamberlain leaves the new man Lenglet on his Aris as he bullocked past him on the right. He pulled a cross back to the near post for Welbeck who sliced his shot to the back post whence Lacazette stabbed it home.

Three subs

Ganso and Lenglet for Escudero and Banega, Xhaka for Willock.

59 min

Lacazette drops deep to play it back to Willock then turns and heads into the box but Arsenal get bogged down in midfield and only get out when they go back to Monreal who picks a pass to Bramall. he finds Ozil and he skitters towards the box, laying it into lLcazette's feet but he can't turn.

57 min

At last Arsenal have some possession and Elneny comes out to bring it forward. He passes to Ozil who plays a measure daisycutter diagonal from the left to the D. Ramsey flicks it on to Lacazette who scuffs a low shot at David Soria.

55 min

Willock concedes a free-kick on the right. He's wearing the No69 shirt. From the free-kick Correa goes to the byline and Koscielny has to knock it behind.

53 min

Montoya has come on for Sevilla. His side hold the ball.

51 min

Mercado takes a throw on the right, Sevilla work it across the back four and up the left then back again. Side to side we go. Arsenal press them and fall into two lines, a four and a five before winning the ball back. But Ramsey gives it away again.

50 min

That's rather taken the breeze out of Arsenal's sails.

GOAL!!

Arsenal 0-1 Sevilla (Correa)A cute reverse pass from Ben Yedder to Correa who dinked it past Cech from 12 yards. Arsenal thought he was offside but he wasn't.

47 min

Here we go again - Oxlade-Chamberlain is playing on the right now and Bramall on the left and he and Monreal work some space by the corner flag but the latter lets Mercado get the better of him.

Arsenal sub

Cohen Bramall replaces Hector Bellerin.

You would think

That there would be a finite number of storage units that people have hired and abandoned their tat in. But not on Quest. Oh no. Insert Jack Wilshere joke here.

No half-time analysis

But a repeat of the pre-match feature on how to French polish a water stain off your table top. This should catch on. Larry David would love this. He respects wood. But do you?

Half-time: Arsenal 0-0 Sevilla

Welbeck has played well, Bellerin and Oxlade-Chamberlain are finding space on the flanks and Lacazette is buzzing around. So far so good but the midfield looks vulnerable when Banega picks a pass.

45 min

Arsenal are caught on the hop when a ball up for Nolito takes out their midfield. The winger heads into the box but instead of thumping a low shot with his left foot, looks for Ben Yedder which allows Koscielny to dive in to knock t behind. Corner on the threshold of half-time. Arsenal head it clear and the ref blows for time.

44 min

From the free-kick on the right Arsenal switch wings, the play it into the middle. Lacazette stuns the pass 20 yards out as the fans yell 'Shoot!'. He tries to but is a little hesitant and Carrico leaps out to blcok it.

42 min

Elneny ends the considered counter-attack by booting out Mercado's near-post cross for a corner after Nolito used his strength to hold on to the ball and buy time for reinforcements. Another poor corner is comfortably cleared, Arsenal bomb up the right and earn a free-kick when Escudero obstructs Bellerin with a fistful of his shirt.

41 min

Arsenal corner when Nzonzi intervenes. Ozil sticks it on Pareja's head who clears but Arsenal win the second ball and attack again down the right, Bellerin winning a second corner with his low cross into a crowded box. Ozil does the same again, picking out a defender who clears to the left and Sevilla attempt to spring free.

39 min

Welbeck roasts Escudero on the Arsenal right, puts the pace hurt on him and can hear Lacazette screaming for it at the back post whither he has checked his run. But enough Sevilla defenders surround him to prevent Welbeck frim reaching him.

38 min

Krohn-Dehli lifts a pass up the right for Correa who gets to the byline and cuts a cross back to the edge of the box. No one there but young Willock who dawdles on it as he tries to dribble it away. Mercado pounces on him, mugs him and hooks a weak shot wide.

36 min

Cech hoofs a goalkick straight into touch.

34 min

Chip towards the Arsenal box by Banega is headed softly by Elneny to the edge of the D. Nolito meets it sweetly first time on the full but leathers the volley over the bar. He wanted it to dip but it was beyond the crossbar and in the crowd before it did.

32 min

Ramsey fashions a chance for himself by turning Nzonzi 20 yards out, careering to the left where he gets a fortunate break off Pareja's shins before trying to bend a shot in from 15 yards. He doesn't get enough whip on it and it flies past David Soria's left post.

29 min

Welbeck kills Carrico in a 40-yard sprint from halfway but the Portugal centre-back positions himself better than he runs and forces Welbeck wide. He tries to surprise the keeper with a disguised right-foot shot mid stride but stabs it wide.

27 min

Sevilla get Banega on the ball deep and he lifts a pass out to the right wing for Correa who plays a neat interchange with Mercado and earns a corner from his cross. Banega hits an outswinger on to Carrico's head and he, under no pressure, powers it wide.

24 min

Arsenal are encouragingly urgent in their play and more direct in terms of crossing than I remember. Cech just tried to knock the ball past Ben Yedder and then outsprint him to clear. He managed to do it but he looked rather stately in the attempt. Wouldn't be wise to do that again.

22 min

He lifts a tremendous, looping cross to the back post and Bellerin meets it on the volley and blooters it into orbit. High, wide and hideous.

21 min

Arsenal probe, shifting it from side to side and work a one-two with Lacazette and Oxlade-Chamberlain to free the wing-back to run to the corner flag.

18 min

Nolito demands a penalty when his cross hits Willock who was turning his head away and was struck on the elbow as he tried to block it. Nothing doing. Up the other end Arsenal have a free-kick 20 yards out for a foul on Ozil, I think. Oxlade-Chamberlain pulls rank to take it. And sprays it wildly over the bar, about 10ft over to be precise. I can hear the cry of 'Garbage' from the Yorkshire Gooners.

16 min

Lacazette rolls a pass out to the right from 15 yards and into touch when he really could have tried to shoot between Pareja's legs. Bellerin wasn't anticipating but it was a promising move set up by Welbeck's gambolling run. Thirty seconds earlier Banega opened up a gap between Elneny and Monreal like a can of beans to drill a pass down the inside-right channel for Ben Yedder. The French No9 peeled off to the right and stabbed a low shot against the post as Cech dived towards him.

14 min

Terrific tackle by Pareja on Bellerin who had gone past Escudero and was shaping to cross wide on the right. But the Sevilla captain was on him like a man-trap. This no co-commentator business should catch on. It's great.

13 min

Mercado takes it up the right, shifts it inside for Banega who balloons a 30-yard shot over the bar.

Credit: John Walton/PA

12 min

In it comes tamely and David Soria, wearing fuchsia, gobbles it up unchallenged.

11 min

Good intervention from Willock to intercept Nolito's rather telegraphed pass from the inside-left spot towards Ben Yedder. Welbeck, Ramsey and Oxlade-Chamberlain play a neat triangle on the left but the latter loses the ball when it skips ahead of him. Welbeck recovers it to have a run at Pareja who tackles him and clips the ball out for a corner.

9 min

Banega twists and threads a pass out to Ben Yedder on the left and the centre-forward tries to repay the provider with a curling near-post ball to meet his burst. But it's too close to Cech who dives forward to grab it with both hands and clutch it to his chest.

7 min

Miscontrol by Ozil deep on the right ends a swift counter-attack sparked by Koscielny's ball-winning intervention in his own box. Arsenal are shifting the ball upfield very smoothly and swiftly which ought to be encouraging.

 5 min

Oxlade-Chamberlain earns a corner when taking on Mercado who tackles him on the slide by the touchline. Inswinging corner from the left by Ozil, straight on to Koscielny's head by the penalty spot but he doesn't get above it or enough power on it and floats it low to David Soria's right. The keeper gets down to make an easy save.

3 min

Elneny. playing in the middle of the back three, starts an attack with a lovely pass threaded through the heart of midfield which is spun out to the right by Ramsey. Bellerin takes it on, pulls back the cross along the ground for Lacazette's run but Carrico gets there first to clear.

1 min

This is very old school coverage - No HD and only the commentator Kevin Keatings so far. I quite like the lack of voices. Arsenal move it back to Cech through Koscielny and work it up the right but Joe Willock loses the ball in the middle of the park.

Interesting opening from Quest TV

Who have the UK rights. There is in fact no opening. It just starts in the tunnel and a disembodied voice proclaiming 'Welcome'.

Sevilla's new boys

In the starting XI are Ever Banega, who has returned after a season at Inter for £8m, and Nolito, who began impressively at Man City but was frozen out after injury, who went back to Spain for the same fee. Wissam Ben Yedder, 'Benebut', scored 11 goals for the side in their Liga campaign in which they finished fourth.

Ahoy!

And the question on everyone's lips this midsummer afternoon is can Arsenal win their fifth Emirates Cup? Or will Sevilla consign them to the runners-up position for the second time. I simply can't wait to find out. Give us an F. Give us an O. Give us another O. Give us a T. Give us a B. Give us an A. Give us an L ... give us another L. FOOTBALL! Yay. It's July 30 ... Altogether now!

The first game he took part in, I was there mysel and saw,
There were jaickets for the goalposts and a tin can for the ba.
The Prince of Wales was there himsel, in his dinner suit,
Jock he passed the ball across, and shouted, “CHARLIE, SHOOT!”

For he’s fitba crazy, he’s fitba mad,
The fitba it has robbed him o the little bit o sense he had,
It would take a dozen skivvies, his claes tae wash and scrub,
Since Jock became a member o that terrible fitba club.

What happened on Saturday?

Theo Walcott scores one of his two goals against Benfica  Credit: Reuters

Arsenal thumped Portuguese champions Benfica 5-2 in the first Emirates Cup match since 2015 after last year's tournament was cancelled to allow the pitch to be relaid.

Theo Walcott scored twice in an impressive pre-season outing for Arsene Wenger's men.

Having fallen behind to Franco Cervi's strike, Walcott scored twice before a Lisandro Lopez own goal and efforts from Olivier Giroud and Alex Iwobi sealed a 5-2 win for the hosts. The England forward said during pre-season that he welcomes the added competition up front following the arrival of club record signing Alexandre Lacazette.

Walcott scored twice playing in a deeper role and, with the future of talisman Alexis Sanchez still up for debate, Walcott will have enjoyed taking centre-stage.

Teenage wing-back Reiss Nelson also impressed in Arsenal's resounding win, crossing perfectly for Giroud to score the fourth.

Wissam Ben Yedder's penalty gave Sevilla a narrow 1-0 win over RB Leipzig to set up today's Emirates Cup decider.

The striker converted from 12 yards to give Eduardo Berizzo's side a deserved victory at the Emirates Stadium against a strong Leipzig side featuring Emil Forsberg and Liverpool target Naby Keita.

What's the team news?

One player who definitely won't feature on Sunday is Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez.

Arsene Wenger has given the 28-year-old permission to delay his return to training after contracting flu.

"He has flu, yes. I had him on text yesterday," said Wenger after Saturday's 5-2 win over Benfica.

Enfermo 😢🌡💉🤒🤧 sick 🤒🤒🤒🤒🤒

The Arsenal manager also reiterated his belief that the Manchester City and PSG target will be staying at the club.

"There's no development - he is staying, of course," said Wenger.

Like Jack Wilshere and Mesut Ozil, Sanchez is entering into the final year of is contract but Wenger is confident the former Barcelona player will honour his deal.

"The players who have one year of their contract have to respect their contract and play out their contract," Wenger said.

"For a manager, it's a bit different because it concerns more what is the future of the club.

"The players were thinking, 'What's going on and what's happening?', so it creates uncertainty [with my contract] because it's a global policy.

"I am responsible for the global policy of the club but for the players it is different."
