Exclusive – Michael Duberry warns Frank Lampard he would ruin ‘legendary’ status at Chelsea if he completes Man United move

Michael Duberry has warned Frank Lampard that a move to Manchester United would ruin his ‘legendary’ status at Chelsea.

The Blues midfielder, whose contract expires in the summer, has been linked with a move to the Red Devils after the west London club decided against offering the 34-year-old a new deal.

The Stamford Bridge faithful made their feelings clear during the 2-0 Capital One Cup semi-final first leg defeat to Swansea, by chanting ‘sign him up’ when the England star emerged onto the pitch as a second half substitute.

And Duberry claims the former West Ham man should think carefully about his next move.

“Frank Lampard can do a job for any team in the Premier League,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show.

“He’s got a lot to offer. He’s a world class player, a professional and keeps himself healthy. Age is nothing but a number because he keeps himself in shape.

“He’s adored at Chelsea so why he would want to go to Manchester United and ruin his legendary status at Chelsea, I don’t know."

Lampard has been used sparingly this season, with many of his appearances coming from the substitues' bench, and Duberry went on to state that he doesn't understand why interim manager Rafa Benitez doesn't start the England man.

“When Lampard plays the team do much better and, more often than not, they win," he added. "Everyone is scratching their heads as to why Chelsea want to let a player go who can still contribute.

"He’s a real focal point, a leader, why would you let anyone like that go?”
