Sevilla striker Wissam Ben Yedder has jokingly told Arsenal to give up their Emirates Cup trophy after their loss to the Spanish side on Sunday.

Despite Sevilla winning both of their matches in north London this weekend they were denied a pre-season trinket, with Arsenal instead retaining the trophy by virtue of having scored more goals.

The Spanish side beat RB Leipzig 1-0 – Ben Yedder scoring the penalty – before overcoming Arsenal 2-1 in the tournament’s final game.

However with the Emirates Cup handing an additional point to teams for every goal they scored Arsenal, 5-2 winners of Benfica, found themselves level on points with Sevilla at the end of the competition.

Pos Team W D L Goals Pts
1 Arsenal 1 0 1 6 9
2 Sevilla 2 0 0 3 9
3 RB Leipzig 1 0 1 2 5
4 Benfica 0 0 2 2 2

The Gunners won the title by virtue of having scored more goals with Sevilla players looking somewhat perplexed on the field as a sheepish Per Mertesacker declined to raise the trophy.

Sevilla's two wins would have counted for naught even if they had scored as many goals as the Gunners, with the ultimate tie breaker for the tournament being the number of shots on target registered by either side.

Posting on Twitter after the game Ben Yedder wrote: “We won 2/2 but we are not first… give us back the cup Arsenal ahaha.”

Sevilla manager Eduardo Berizzo was much less concerned about departing North London without any silverware, insisting in his post-match press conference that finishing second to Arsenal did not bother him even if he thought it was “strange”.
