Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere endured a disastrous return to north London in Bournemouth's 4-0 defeat to Tottenham this afternoon.

The England international, who has struggled for form and fitness during his loan spell with Eddie Howe's side, was unable to prevent the Cherries' demise at White Hart Lane.

Spurs raced into an early lead thanks to Mousa Dembele's strike and Wilshere was at fault for the hosts' second after conceding possession inside his own half.

Harry Kane seized on Wilshere's loose touch before picking out Heung-min Son, who finished confidently from a tight angle.

Kane added a third just moments after the break but the loudest cheer of the day was arguably reserved for Wilshere when the 25-year-old went down nursing an injury inside Spurs' penalty area.

The Gunner received a flurry of verbal abuse from the home fans as he made his way off the pitch before receiving treatment and attempting to continue.

But it was not to be and Wilshere admitted defeat before trudging down the tunnel with the sound of 'Jack Wilshere - it's happened again' ringing in his ears.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe said after the game: "I don't know [about the injury] - I've got no idea - I know as much as what you saw.

"It was difficult for all our team, not just Jack. We wanted to perofrm much better than that but it's difficult to single Jack out."

Wilshere's career has been plagued by injury, contributing to his uncertain future at Emirates Stadium. The midfielder's contract expires at the end of next season and he is set to discuss his long-term future with Arsenal this summer.

Having said Tottenham's rise has not hurt him in the build-up to today's game the Lilywhites certainly enjoyed Wilshere's demise.
