Newcastle full-back Daryl Janmaat says the Magpies still have time to turn their season around.

Newcastle are currently second from bottom of the Premier League standings after suffering a 5-1 hammering at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

And the Dutch international agrees that the club have made a very disappointing start to the campaign and that far more was expected from them.

Boss Steve McClaren called the players in on Sunday for an extra training session and Janmaat told Sky Sports he felt that was fair enough.

Newcastle suffered another crushing defeat

"For him (McClaren), it is hard as well. He came in the summer with a lot of ambitions," Janmaat said.

"We bought some new players in and we all expected more from the start of the season. It's disappointing and I understand it but there are still 24 games to go.

"It is not over still, we have chances enough. We have to put it right quickly."

Janmaat was named the North-East Football Writers' Association player of the year award on Sunday night, having impressed since arriving from Feyenoord ahead of the 2014/15 season.

"It's a big thing for me. I always work hard and when you get something like this back, it's really nice," he told the club's website.

"It's great for me and a lot of great names have won this award, like (Alan) Shearer and (Peter) Beardsley, some of the biggest names to have played for the club.

"I'm really proud of it."

Janmaat's Newcastle team mate Ayoze Perez bagged the young player of the year award, having scored 10 times since signing in June of last year.

"Last season was my first year here, so to win this award is a big pleasure for me," he said.
