Both teams had a rough weekend and could use a bounceback win in a bad way.

Nothing really went to plan for either Manchester United or Everton this weekend, with the Red Devils taking a scoreless draw with West Bromwich Albion, and Everton getting obliterated by Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby. Both teams were hoping to run their respective win streaks out to three matches, but instead they have to start all over from scratch.

Interestingly, the two teams are just one point apart from each other in the table, with Manchester United in fifth place on 53 points, and Everton in seventh with 50 points. If Everton can somehow pull off the upset, they’d be dead even with United in the table, potentially setting up an interesting stretch of the season while they battle it out over the Europa League spot and see if they can close in on the top four.

Of course, Jose Mourinho and company have their sights set much higher than a brawl with Everton, and will look to put this match away as early as they can. They believe they have bigger fish to fry, with a Europa League quarterfinal tie coming up and a big match against Chelsea less than two weeks away. They don’t want to waste their energy here, so they’ll be trying to score several goals as early as they can before putting on the brakes and taking away Everton’s hopes at striking the upset they want.

Everton are dealing with a ton of injuries right now, with over half of their “ideal” starting lineup either out or in serious doubt. James McCarthy and Morgan Schneiderlin are sidelined, denying Everton their top-choice midfield pairing, and their top reserve Muhamed Besic is out as well. Add that to the likely absence of Ramiro Funes Mori, Seamus Coleman, and Aaron Lennon, and Ronald Koeman is going to be struggling to put out a strong lineup.

Manchester United are dealing with a few injuries of their own, with each of Juan Mata, Chris Smalling, and Phil Jones unlikely to play, though they might be getting Paul Pogba back. That would be a big boost to a midfield that has badly missed him, and Jose Mourinho will be eager to put the dynamic Frenchman back in his team.
