Manchester United and Barcelona are set to battle it out for Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos, according to L'Equipe.

United have been linked with moves for the Brazilian centre-back in the past but recent reports suggest that Barcelona are considering swooping.

Jose Mourinho could look to further bolster his defensive ranks in January and Marquinhos is set to once again be linked.

But Barca are reportedly planning to spend as much as £50million to land the 22-year-old.

Scholes wants United to sign Modric or Kroos

Paul Scholes has urged Jose Mourinho to go back into the transfer market (already!) and make a move for Toni Kroos or Luka Modric, writes Mirror Football's Ed Malyon.

The former Manchester United and England midfielder was speaking after the Red Devils' shock defeat to Feyenoord in Rotterdam, in which world-record signing Paul Pogba struggled to make an impact on the game.

And when asked what he'd do to help out the £89million Frenchman, Scholes suggested Michael Carrick as a short-term fix before throwing more money at the problem.

"Mourinho needs to find the right partner or partners," Scholes told BT Sport. "I'd have liked to see Michael Carrick tonight.

"I think he [Pogba] needs - I think he's shown at Juventus - he needs a controlling midfielder next to him and I think Michael's got that controlled ability on the ball.

"Schneiderlin is more concerned about his defensive role rather than being the playmaker in the team, whereas at Juventus he had Pirlo, one of the best playmakers in the world.

Toni Kroos could also do a job for United (

"And I think he [Mourinho] needs to go in the transfer market for somebody like that. Michael's capable of it but I still think they need a controlling midfielder, who can control where Paul goes and can control a game of football.

"I know he's happy with his four players [signed in the transfer window] but I still think they need that type of player. A Luka Modric or a Toni Kroos, and I think these players are available. Paul Pogba would be a lot better playing alongside these types of players."

Chris Smalling needed a police escort to catch Manchester United's flight back from Rotterdam - after struggling to provide a urine sample for drug testers, writes Mirror Football's David McDonnell.

Smalling, who played in United's 1-0 defeat to Feyenoord, took so long to provide a sample he was in danger of missing the flight back to Manchester with the rest of the squad.

The defender was whisked to Rotterdam airport in a car which was accompanied by a police escort, ensuring Smalling made the flight, which had to keep its strict 11pm time slot.

Jose Mourinho and his players landed back in Manchester late on Thursday night and will train tomorrow before travelling down to Watford ahead of their midday kick-off on Sunday.

Mourinho wants United stars to prove themselves

United have suffered back-to-back defeats under Mourinho for the first time

Jose Mourinho has told his pampered Manchester United stars they must prove to him they can motivate themselves, writes Mirror Football's David McDonnell.

United go into Sunday’s lunchtime Premier League clash at Watford on the back of two defeats and needing a win to get their season back on track.

Mourinho’s players went down 1-0 at Dutch side Feyenoord in the Europa League on Thursday, following their 2-1 derby defeat to local rivals Manchester City last weekend.

And the self-styled Special One has told his players they should have enough desire to produce their best on the pitch, with the millions they earn and lavish lifestyles they lead away from football.

“I always say that the best motivation you can have is your own motivation,” said Mourinho.

“I always feel that my job is that I am an extra source of motivation, but the motivation belongs to the player.

“And if the players at this age need motivating, with the great life, the money they have to do what they want... I think they shouldn’t need an extra source of motivation. That belongs to themselves.

“So I believe on Sunday they will try to win the match and give everything, and I will just try to help.”

Jose Mourinho has defended Manchester United ’s world-record signing Paul Pogba and insisted he will soon justify his £89million fee, writes Mirror Football's David McDonnell.

Midfielder Pogba produced another invisible display in United’s 1-0 Europa League loss to Feyenoord on Thursday, on the back of a poor showing in the Manchester derby defeat last weekend.

But Mourinho, who admitted Pogba has been short of his best on the night , defended United’s decision to break the world transfer record to sign the 23-year-old from Italian champions Juventus this summer.

“The world record fee is always a question that will be open until somebody breaks the record,” said Mourinho.

“But there are clubs that paid £20million, £30m or £40m, which is a bigger deal than what United paid for Paul, because you make a relation between what you pay and the club revenue, and you realise that other clubs paying £20m, £30m or £40m is a much bigger thing than what we did.

“I just want Paul to forget that and to play his football. He had no-pre season, played in the final of the Euros, had a holiday and then came back. It’s normal that in the first week he had the very good impact he did in the first game."
