Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has challenged the Red Devils hierarchy to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic's goals - or see their title drought go on.

The Swede netted on 28 occasions last term but suffered a cruciate ligament knee injury at the end of the campaign and United opted not to extend his deal.

Jose Mourinho's side finished 24 points behind leaders Chelsea, and scored 31 goals fewer than the Blues.

But United's success in the Europa League means they will play in the Champions League in 2017-18, and Giggs wants to see them splash the cash on a big-name striker to spearhead their season.

“United in my view had a fantastic season winning two trophies," Giggs told the Manchester Evening News.

"The Community Shield doesn't count, but they won the EFL and Europa League. However, they were 24 points behind Chelsea in the league.

“But I still think it was a good season. Jose's buys have been really good so far since he took over. If he has another summer bringing in good players I don't see why they don't have a chance of winning the league next year.

“It is a lot to bridge but Chelsea were even further away and Leicester came from nowhere. It is different times. It is difficult to predict.

“The main thing they have got to do is find goals from somewhere because you can't just rely on one person like they did last year with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“Any successful side either has a 30-goal a season centre forward or they are like Liverpool and are scoring from everywhere. United haven't got either at the moment.

“They need to bring in a striker who can score goals or Marcus Rashford has to score a load. The midfielders and defenders have to pitch in.”

United have had Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata on the radar and after cooling their interest in Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann, the 24-year-old Spaniard is the only name being bandied around.

“I've always said you need quality but also the character who can come to Old Trafford and make an instant impact just like Ibrahimovic did,” added Giggs.

“You need a top proven striker who will come to Old Trafford and say 'this is my stage'.

“I've not thought about individuals but it has to be someone who can score goals. Simple as that.”
