Depay holds Reds talks

Memphis Depay flew in by private jet for secret talks with Liverpool this week.

The Dutch superstar made the trip on Thursday when he jetted to Manchester airport with his advisors Kees Ploegsma and Kees Vos from top agency SEG International.

Depay’s arrival airport sparked speculation he was ready to open talks with Manchester United.

The Mirror can reveal that it was Anfield officials – including MD Ian Ayre - he met in a hotel close to the airport, after the Reds were given permission by PSV Eindhoven to talk to the Holland international.

Sources in Eindhoven have revealed the 21-year-old was hugely impressed not only by Liverpool’s determination in pursuing him for more than a year, but also in the vision they presented.

They have been told by PSV that the fee for the player who starred at the 2014 World Cup will be around £20 million.

Rodgers eyeing summer striker move

Brendan Rodgers has offered a brutal assessment of Liverpool’s failings by admitting they have been undermined by a fatal lack of goals.

And the Reds boss conceded he will need to look beyond injury-prone Daniel Sturridge, to aggressively pursue another top-class striker in the summer.

Rodgers was in no mood to pull his punches as he all but dismissed the prospect of Mario Balotelli ever coming good at Anfield – and also suggested he will have to plan without Sturridge because of the striker’s frailty.

And in a clear message to Liverpool’s owners, he argued it is a near-miracle his team have managed to get so close to the Champions League places after losing what amounts to a season’s worth of goals when Luis Suarez wasn’t adequately replaced last summer.

“It’s not rocket science. We haven’t scored enough goals this year," he said.

"We’re on course to be, if the sequence goes on, 60 goals down on last year. That’s a huge amount.

"The season before I came in we had 49 goals – so you’re taking nearly a season of goals out of the team.

"We need more of a scoring threat, we’ve missed it immensely.

“What the players have done to arrive where we have is credit to them without those goals. But in the summer we have to try and find goals again.”

Henderson tells Sterling to renew Anfield deal

Jordan Henderson has urged Raheem Sterling to follow suit after committing his long-term future to Liverpool, report the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds midfielder has signed a five-year contract to keep him at Anfield until 2020 and he’s hoping his fellow England international also puts pen to paper over the coming months.

Sterling, whose current deal runs until 2017, recently rejected Liverpool’s latest offer of £100,000 per week and told boss Brendan Rodgers that he didn’t want to hold any further talks until after the end of the season.

That stand-off has sparked fears that Sterling’s agent is trying to engineer a move away from the club with speculation linking him with Real Madrid, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

However, Liverpool have no intention of selling him this summer and Henderson believes Anfield is the best place for Sterling to continue his development.

“I’ve known Raheem for a good few years now. He is a good friend of mine and my team-mate,” Henderson said.

“He has just got to do whatever he thinks is best but, if I was giving him advice, of course I would say: ‘This is Liverpool’. I think this is the best place for him."

FSG want to develop youngsters, insists Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers insists Liverpool need quality rather than quantity this summer.

The Reds boss brought in several new faces last summer for over £100million as he looked to re-strengthen after the departure of Luis Suarez.

And although Rodgers says he wants to bring in better individuals, he does not expect the Fenway Sports Group to change the club's buying policy of investing in youth.

The likes of Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling, Jordon Ibe and Emre Can have all flourished under Rodgers' guidance and the Liverpool boss expects more to follow.

“The owners have great belief in their model,” Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo.

“How they work has brought them success in their many businesses. They are not about to rip up the plan.

“They will continue to support the work they believe in which is wanting to get young players in who can be developed."

Liverpool believe they will sign James Milner for free when his Manchester City contract expires in the summer, according to ESPN.

The 29-year-old is refusing to sign a new deal at the Etihad as he is unhappy with the role he currently plays under Manuel Pellegrini.

Liverpool were interested in Milner in 2010 but he opted to move to City from Aston Villa.

The England international has made 30 appearances in all competitions for the Sky Blues this season.

Brendan Rodgers is keen on signing Marseille defender Rod Fanni on a free transfer this summer, according to Metro.

The 33-year-old's current deal with the Ligue 1 club is set to expire in the summer and he isn't going to be given a new deal.

Rodgers is attracted by the experience Fanni would bring to the Reds' often shaky back four.

The Frenchman has racked up 24 appearances for Marseille this campaign.
