Barcelona are "close" to signing Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele, according to the club's sporting director.

The Catalan side, who lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday night, are looking to bolster their squad following the departure of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain.

Barcelona have identified Liverpool midfielder Coutinho and Dortmund forward Dembele as their primary targets and look set to spend all of the €222million they received from Neymar's sale on new acquisitions.

Dortmund are understood to be considering a bid for Dembele, 20, which could rise to as much as €130million (£118million) with add-ons.

Liverpool are determined to hold on to Coutinho, who signed a new five-year contract just last season, but Barcelona feel a bid of around £120million might be enough.

Speaking on Wednesday night, Barcelona's sporting director Pep Segura admitted the club was in conversations with both players and added he was optimistic they would be playing at the Nou Camp this season.

"We are close to Coutinho and Dembele, we are discussing their conditions but we do not know when they will be sealed," Segura told Spanish television station TV3. "We hope they will be Barcelona players this season."

Barcelona fans will indeed be hoping they can add to their squad after they were comprehensively outplayed in the Super Cup by rivals Real.

Marco Asensio, who also struck a spectacular goal in the first leg, pulled off the same trick after just four minutes with a long-range curler that shook Barcelona, who never seemed to recover.

Karim Benzema doubled Madrid’s lead when he capitalised on slack defending to fire home from Marcelo’s low cross, while Lucas Vazquez hit the post for Madrid.

Lionel Messi’s chip hit the bar as Barcelona tried to respond and Suarez headed against the post, but it was too little, too late for the Catalans.
