Chelsea are on the brink of signing defender Davide Zappacosta from Torino.

The 25-year-old is the subject of a £23million deal for the Blues and will provide cover at right wing-back after Antonio Conte missed out on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool.

Zappacosta will battle with Victor Moses for a first-team spot, but it is a signing which has come a little out of the blue.

Zappacosta is a talented right-back that is highly regarded by many in Serie A.

After initially appearing for both Atalanta and Avellino as part of a co-ownership deal, the player completed a permanent deal to Atalanta in June 2014.

During his time with La Dea, Zappacosta came to the attention of Juventus who were keen to bring the player to Turin.

Although the player did eventually end up in the Italian city, it was Torino who clinched his signature a year later in a double deal alongside Daniele Baselli.

While Conte didn’t call the player up as part of the final 23-man squad, it seems he has kept his eye on him over the past year before making his move in the transfer market.

Although Andrea Belotti may have stolen all the headlines at Torino last season, Zappacosta also caught the eye for the Serie A side.

The right-back is highly regarded in Italy and he caught the eye of a number of top teams last season with his displays for his side.

Zappacosta appeared in 29 league games for Torino last season and he had a big impact for his team in both defence and attack.

The 25-year-old created 41 chances for his teammates last season, setting up five goals in the process.

As well as teeing up goals, Zappacosta also got his name on the scoresheet last season with a goal in the 3-1 win at Chievo in April.

How much will he cost?

Zappacosta is expected to move to Stamford Bridge for a fee of around €25million.

Liverpool and Swansea have been linked with the Italian in the past, while Sunderland had a €10million bid rejected by Torino last summer.

Juventus had scouted the full-back previously and he was keen on a move as his entire family are all Juve fans.
