Wayne Rooney was among the mourners at Freddy Shepherd's funeral on Saturday.

The former Newcastle United chairman passed away last month aged 75.

He was laid to rest at St George's Church in Jesmond.

Shepherd tried to sign Rooney for Newcastle from Everton and was later chairman of Triple S Sports & Entertainement, who Rooney is represented by.

Following his passing, the Toffees striker tweeted his condolences.

He was joined at the funeral by former Newcastle players Alan Shearer, Shay Given and Peter Beardsley plus ex-bosses Sam Allardyce and Kenny Dalglish.

Along with the Sir John Hall, the businessman oversaw the big spending of the Kevin Keegan era and near misses in the Premier League and FA Cup.

Under Shepherd, Newcastle regularly finished in the top seven, and as high as runners up.

He led the club to several memorable European campaigns including into the latter stages of the Champions League under Sir Bobby Robson.

Meanwhile, the Everton striker was pictured working at a garden centre on Friday as he begins his community service.

Rooney must complete 100 hours following his drink-drive shame and is using the international break to do so.

He was three times the drink-driving limit when he was pulled over last month and continues to fight to save his marriage.
