Rio Ferdinand has said that football should be leading the fight against racism in sport, but fears not enough is currently being done by the authorities.

In the video below you can see the Manchester United defender speak about the incident earlier this year that saw Kevin Prince Boateng walk off the pitch in protest at the racial abuse he received playing in a friendly for AC Milan, saying he fully supported the former Portsmouth midfielder.

"I don't think you can condemn someone for doing that," said the 34-year-old, before casting the blame on FIFA that isn't doing enough to combat racist behaviour.

"There's so many things we can do to steer people from being racists, but I don't think we've hit it hard enough. There needs to be a zero tolerance stance.

"In football we could be the standard bearers and the people that set the right tone, but fines have not been enough."

The former England centre-back also discusses the impact that Robin Van Persie has had on the Red Devils since his arrival from Arsenal last season, calling the Dutch forward "a smooth operator."
