Thomas Lemar showed Arsenal what they were missing out on with a sensational double for France - hours after rejecting a £90million transfer to the Emirates.

Arsene Wenger had targeted Lemar as a potential late signing and would have replaced Alexis Sanchez if the deal had been agreed.

But Monaco midfielder Lemar said no to the switch on the final day of the summer transfer window.

Lemar, 21, instead turned his attention back to international duty, as he was named in the starting XI for France's game against Netherlands.

He justified his selection in the second half, hammering a half-volley into the top corner as the game entered its final 15 minutes.

And he doubled his tally with a simple tap in from Antoine Griezmann's square ball minutes later.

It confirmed the win for France, who had taken the lead in the first half through former Manchester United target Griezmann.

Kylian Mbappe, playing shortly after his loan move to Paris Saint-Germain was confirmed, completed the rout in stoppage time.

Les Bleus are in a fight to qualify for the World Cup finals next summer but the win over the Netherlands eased the pressure on their shoulders.

Lemar was part of the starting XI that also contained Arsenal's Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny.

The Gunners, meanwhile, insist Sanchez is staying and now they are finished in the market after their move for Lemar broke down.

Manchester City left it too late to make a bid and even though they tabled £60m it did not give them enough time to get a deal done.

Arsenal have been interested in Lemar - in a deal that could have cost up to £92m -and PSG star Julian Draxler but there has not been enough time to get it done.

Now Arsenal have told City they will not sell.

City came back with a new bid of £55m - £50m plus £5m in add-ons - but Arsenal have been unable to find a replacement in the restricted time before the deadline.

While the money was close to what Arsenal wanted, a deal for Lemar or Draxler has so far proved too difficult.
