Virgil van Dijk has named the toughest opponent he has faced - and he plays for Liverpool.

The Southampton defender handed in a transfer request in the summer in a bid to move to Anfield.

But after an embarrassing climb down over their alleged tapping-up of the player, Liverpool ended their interest, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Van Dijk was discussing the best centre-forwards he has come up against in the Premier League with ex-Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand.

The pair were talking in connection with the release of FIFA 18 and Van Dijk selected Reds forward Daniel Sturridge as the best he has faced, before adding Manchester City's Sergio Aguero.

Van Dik said: "I think Sturridge when he is fit. He's a great striker.

"And I think Aguero is an amazing striker as well you know."

The Dutchman also gave his take on his improved rating of 83 on the latest FIFA release.

"I was 79 last season, so [the new card is] a good improvement, a good upgrade – could be better," he added.

"I’ve seen everything and I think my pace should be a little bit higher, but no it’s alright for a centre-back on FIFA.

"But yes, if I need to improve something on FIFA it would be pace."
