Kylian Mbappe's connection with Real Madrid has been well trodden this summer transfer window, with La Liga's defending champions keen to sign the teenager.

They'll have plenty of competition, of course, Arsenal also considering flashing their chequebook for the French wunderkid.

But the signing of Mbappe to Real could have a major ripple effect, according to European football expert Graham Hunter.

Speaking to the Daily Record's first Transfer Window podcast, which you can listen to above, Hunter said he believed Mbappe's arrival could mean the departure of Gareth Bale.

And that should Bale leave the Bernabeu, he could make a stunning return to the Premier League.

Hunter explains Los Blancos have been tracking the Frenchman since he was 14 years old and Zinedine Zidane wants to make the youngster part of his forward line.

And if Los Galacticos can fend off interest in the forward from the Gunners and PSG, this could see Bale offloaded in favour of the Monaco striker, putting Manchester United on red alert.

Both Jose Mourinho and United chief Ed Woodward want to bring Bale to the Theatre of Dreams, but a lot hinges on the movements of Cristiano Ronaldo, with Real Madrid "hamstrung" by the Portguese star's shock revelation he wants to leave Madrid this summer.

Ronaldo's potential departure would free up funds for Real sign Mbappe, who will command a world record transfer fee if he makes the move.

Yet Bale feels he is not yet finished at the Bernabeau and after an injury hit 2016/17 season, he is keen to prove his worth to Zidane.

Announcing in June Ronaldo is far from happy at Real Madrid, amid his ongoing tax battle with the Spanish government, Ronaldo's representatives stated: "He's very sad and really upset."

"He doesn't want to stay in Spain. At this moment, he wants to leave."

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez has since described the situation as "very strange" while claiming he is confident the player will remain in Spain.

He said: “Ronaldo is a Madrid player, we’re delighted with him, [but] there was a story in the paper that said he was annoyed with the treatment given to his tax issue. I think the best thing for him and Madrid is for him to stay: we’ll see what happens.

“Right now, Cristiano is a Real Madrid player and something very strange would have to happen for him not to be, and I am not [even] contemplating that.”
