Louis van Gaal has admitted he would not be satisfied with Arsene Wenger’s record at Arsenal.

Wenger last won the Premier League title 11 years ago, during which time the Arsenal boss has won just three FA Cups.

Van Gaal has won titles wherever he has managed and steered Manchester United to the top of the table in his second season in charge.

United go to Arsenal on Sunday. Van Gaal revealed his admiration for Wenger but said he could not go so long without a title triumph.

“That’s difficult to answer, because I have won a lot of titles and that’s also my aim,” said Van Gaal.

“I wanted to do that in different countries. Not only in the Netherlands, but after that in Spain and after that in Germany and after that England.

“That’s my ambition. That’s why already I am answering your question. I am not that type. I like to win a lot.”

Despite admitting he could not countenance such a long title drought as Wenger’s, Van Gaal praised the longevity of the Arsenal boss, who celebrated 19 years in charge of the Gunners this week.

“I think he’s doing great work,” said Van Gaal. “When you can, like Sir Alex Ferguson, stay in a club for such a long time, you have to be very good, otherwise you shall not succeed.

"So I think Arsene Wenger is one of the best coaches in the world, as is Sir Alex, who is the best, as he won the most titles.

“But Arsene Wenger, when you are with one club for a long time, and everyone is satisfied - the fans, the board, the players - then you are very good, believe me.”

Van Gaal insists he will leave United when his contract expires at the end of next season, but refused to say whether it would be the biggest disappointment of his career if he failed to win the Premier League.

“You can never be disappointed when you have done everything, to have reached a certain level, because to be the champion, you need also the circumstances in your favour,” said Van Gaal.

“That’s not always the case, and you can analyse that and you can evaluate that. The biggest disappointment in my career was my failure with the national team.

"Not, for example, the failure in the season when I lost the championship in my last match.

“It’s always dependent on what evaluation you make. So I cannot say in advance, it shall be my biggest disappointment, because I shall always evaluate myself.

“Sometimes I say ‘I could have done better’ and sometimes I think circumstances were [to blame].”

Van Gaal believes United can last the distance in the title race, now they are back on top of the table.

“You have to believe in this and the balance in our selection is much better than last year,” said the United boss.

“Last year we also had the chance [to win the title], so I believe in that, but the most important thing is that the players are believing in that and, when we win at Arsenal, the belief shall raise a lot.”
