So it's finally happened.

Virgil van Dijk has attempted to push through a move to a bigger club and has handed in a transfer request at Southampton.

The Dutch international, who has been linked with a move to Liverpool all summer, claimed he "had no alternative" but to take this action.

Adding: "Over the past six months I have held numerous discussions with representatives of the board, the former manager Claude Puel as well as the new manager Mauricio Pellegrino to inform them all of my desire to leave the club in search of a new challenge."

The news comes as Reds boss Jurgen Klopp told the press he does not need another centre-back as he is happy with the four at his disposal.

Well he does have Ragnar Klavan, Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all capable of playing in the position, right?

So there isn't really room for another one, is there?
