Bertrand Traore ensured Lyon would be returning to France with all three points from their Europa League trip to Everton.
The former Chelsea midfielder bagged a winner for the Ligue 1 side after Ashley Williams drew the game level with a great headed goal following Nabil Fekir's opener from the penalty spot.
There will be question marks as to whether Williams should have been on the pitch after he sparked a mass brawl following a reckless challenge on Lyon keeper Anthony Lopes, but the Wales international got away with just a booking.
Here's how David Anderson rated the individual performances from Goodison Park.
Everton
Pickford 7
Made a number of saves, including a fine one from Maolida.
Holgate 4
Why did he lunge in like that to concede the penalty?
Keane 6
Helped Everton settle at the back after their poor start.
Williams 8
MOTM Booked. Sparked a huge melee and headed home the equaliser.
Martina 5
Exposed by Traore on the left, but did get forward.
Schneiderlin 6
One great sliding tackle, but needed to be more dynamic.
Davies 7
Set up a chance for Mirallas and nearly scored an own goal.
Vlasic 6
Was bright on the right for Everton and was a useful outlet.
Klaassen 5
Denied by Lopes when through and subbed at half-time.
Calvert-Lewin 6
Started up top and made a nuisance of himself.
Mirallas 6
Made only his second start and had a shot saved.
Subs: Booked Lookman (Klaassen 45mins) 5, Sigurdsson (Schneiderlin 57mins) 6, Ramirez (Mirallas 68mins) 5.
