So Diego Costa is off then. Finally.

The not exactly shy and retiring forward will join his former club Atletico Madrid in a £53m deal in January , following a bitter row with Chelsea boss Antonio Conte which has led to him not featuring at all this season.

Costa won two Premier League titles and the League Cup in his three seasons at Stamford Bridge, during which he became a hero to Blues fans who revelled in his combative nature and ability to wind up opposition defences.

But it seems as though the manner of his departure has strained relations with his club somewhat, at least judging by the statement released on chelseafc.com after he left.

It featured just 30 words, seven of which - almost a quarter - were "Chelsea Football Club", "Atletico Madrid" and "Diego Costa."

Not exactly heartwarming stuff, is it?

And when you compare and contrast that with the 711-word missive penned for Nemanja Matic when he left for Manchester United in July, then you begin to see that they not have been all-too happy with Costa's behaviour in West London.

Matic's message mentions that he played "a pivotal role in two Premier League title successes" and praises his entry in the 2014/15 PFA Team of the Season, which Costa was also in.

It ended with Chelsea "wishing him well for the future", with Costa's merely claiming that he needs to agree personal terms and a medical in Madrid.

Atletico cannot register Costa as a player until January due to the club's transfer embargo, but he will soon begin a specially designed fitness regime in a bid to be fully fit to kick-start his career.

The forward will travel to Madrid in the coming days for his medical and contract talks.
