Olivier Giroud has won the Puskas Award at the Best FIFA Football Awards 2017 in London for his scorpion kick against Crystal Palace.

The Arsenal star received the award at a star-studded ceremony at the London Palladium where Cristiano Ronaldo retained the Best FIFA Men’s Player prize.

The Frenchman netted in outrageous style on New Year's Day at the Emirates Stadium to win the Gunners a rare trophy.

“It is an honour for me,” said Giroud. “I am delighted to receive this in front of legends. I was hoping to win because for me it was a very nice goal in the conception.

"From our box I had the first touch and then after I sprinted till the opponent's box and Alexis gave me a nice cross and I just tried to hit the ball as well as I could in that position with a maximum of efficiency and luck.

"I don't practice that! I like acrobatic gestures but I was surprised when I saw it in the back of the net.

Everything was perfect and I don't think I could do it again. That is why I am very proud to mark history with that goal.”

Giroud's effort did not win BBC's Goal of the Season with Emre Can's strike for Liverpool at Watford getting the vote. Ronaldo, who was accompanied by his young son, beat Lionel Messi and Neymar to win the World Player of the Year award for the fifth time.

“I want seven, five is good but seven is my lucky number so seven would be great,” he said. “I feel happy. I am 32. I win the best player in the world so I am so glad. I want to thank Messi and Neymar for coming. I am very happy to come back to England to receive this honour.”

Zinedine Zidane beat Antonio Conte and Max Allegri for the Men's Coach of the Year award after winning the Champions League-La Liga double with Real Madrid.

The Frenchman said: “I would never have thought I would win something as beautiful and important.”

There was no place in the FIFPRO World 11 for Harry Kane or Gareth Bale, the only British players on the 55-man longlist. There were five Real Madrid players included. Celtic won the FIFA Fan Award.
