Former Arsenal defender Stefan O'Connor could become Newcastle United's latest signing this summer.

According to Chronicle Live, Rafa Benitez's club have been offered the opportunity to seal a two-year deal with the 20-year-old Londoner, who is currently a free agent.

Newcastle will return to the Premier League this year, and they might just need a new pair of legs on board... and a 6ft 1in-tall player like O'Connor could be the ideal choice.

O'Connor failed to secure a place with the Gunners over the past few seasons, spending loan spells with MVV Maastricht and York City.

The youngster arrived at Arsenal from Crystal Palace when he was only 13 years old, despite making only one appearance in Champions League in seven years.

Chronicle Live reporter Lee Ryder suggests that he would be willing to make a fresh start after spending such a long time at Arsenal.

O'Connor spoke about the need to mature and evolve as a player when he signed for MVV Maastricht. He said: "I’ve got to learn how to grow into adulthood and develop myself to become a man.

“I’ve learnt a lot in the eight months I’ve come in.

“I can’t go out into the city because a lot of fans will come up to me.

“I like to keep myself to myself whereas in London every now and then that happens but most of the time I can walk around freely without being recognised.

“I’m trying to get used to it but I’m not a guy who likes to be in the limelight.

“I’m very calm.

“People think I’m a bit too laid back at times but I like to stay calm and play under pressure - I don’t panic.”

O’Connor’s loan move to MVV Maastricht was cut short in April and he is now looking for a new club.
