BURNLEY are closing in on a deal for Stoke City forward Jon Walters.

The Clarets are keen on the 33-year-old and saw a bid for the Irish international rejected last week.

But Sean Dyche's side have returned with a second offer, understood to be in the region of £2m, and the Lancashire Telegraph understands the move is close to being completed.

The Clarets' bid could grow to £3m with add-ons and with Walters about to enter the final year of his contract at the bet365 Stadium, Stoke are content to let him leave the club after seven years in the Potteries.

Walters is reported to be keen on a move to Turf Moor to boost his chances of appearing in next summer's World Cup should the Republic of Ireland qualify and is set for a medical in the next 48 hours.

Clarets chief Dyche has been keen to strengthen his attacking options with uncertainty still surrounding the future of Andre Gray who is out of contract at Turf Moor next summer.

Gray, 26, scored nine goals in his debut Premier League campaign and has been linked with a move to a number of top flight clubs.

Burnley have already seen Michael Keane depart in a club record initial £25m move to Everton and the signing of Walters would be the first incoming at Turf Moor this summer.

Walters, who began his career at Blackburn Rovers and has spent time with Hull City and Ipswich Town during his career. would join his fellow Irish internationals Jeff Hendrick, Stephen Ward, Robbie Brady and Kevin Long in East Lancashire.
