Virgil van Dijk is back in contention for Southampton
Virgil van Dijk has spoken for the first time about his aborted move to Liverpool and given a big hint that he will renew his attempts to leave Southampton in the January transfer window.
Speaking to reporters covering the Holland international squad, the defender who held talks with several Premier League clubs over a move last summer without getting the permission of his club, has stressed that he is now fully committed to Southampton once more.
Yet it appears that his loyalty to his employer may be temporary, as he offered up these comments that will fuel the suspicion he is still keen to join Liverpool.
“I’m not sorry for anything,” he declared, as he reflected on a summer that saw him make the decision to move to the Merseyside club and hand in a transfer request at Southampton in a bid to force through the move.
“Of course, I wanted to make a step up, but Southampton did not want to sell me, but you’re a professional, so now I’ll give everything to the club.”
When asked whether he was still keen to leave the club when the transfer window opens in January, he offered up this comment: “Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what’s possible.”
Van Dijk has been reintegrated into the Southampton set-up in recent weeks, but Independent.ie understands that the club may be more open to offers for the player in January if he continues to express a desire to leave.
While they were keen to make their stand to keep Van Dijk in a bid to highlight their eagerness not to sell their best players at the first opportunity, it may be that the time is right for the player and Southampton to part company at the start of 2018.
