Sean Dyche said Anthony Martial’s winning goal was “a moment of quality”, as he praised his Burnley side for a narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.

The French star hit the only strike shortly after half-time at Turf Moor, with Jose Mourinho admitting that a “great” Burnley made them “fight”.

Dyche also lamented some refereeing decisions. While it looked like Burnley could have had a penalty for handball in the second half, their manager actually just felt a number of close decisions went against them, even if he understood why they were given. He otherwise felt his team gave as good as they got, bar that Martial moment.

"I thought we at least matched them, and at times went beyond them. The defining moment is a moment of quality you have to say,” Dyche said.

"You've got to look beyond the results sometimes.”

Asked about the penalty call, he quipped: "That was one of about 3000! There are fine margins in refereeing sometimes.”

Mourinho meanwhile said he was pleased with the win, especially given the nature of the match.

“I am. It’s a different kind of performance that you try to have, but what you need against a great team like Burnley. We know the way they play. They are better than anyone playing that way. And you need to adapt. You meed to adapt to be successful. We adapted well from a defensive point.

“We should have scored a second goal to kill it, but didn’t. Then we put ourselves in a position where we have to fight, but we did.

“The last few crosses were an image of how competitive the game was.”
