France v Netherlands Betting Special: Robben out to give Oranje fighting chance

Recalled to the national team for the first time since October 2015, Robin Van Persie will be looking to make up for lost time when the Netherlands take on France in Thursday's World Cup qualifier.

The Oranje's all-time top scorer with 50 goals in 101 international appearances, the 34-year-old is priced at 15/2 (8.50) with Genting to offer an immediate reminder of his quality by opening the scoring at the Stade de France.

The Fenerbahce man actually found the net in a 3-2 defeat against the Czech Republic in his last appearance for the national side back in October 2015, and can be backed at 12/5 (3.40) anytime odds to pick up where he left off in the French capital.

However, Van Persie must first prove he is more worthy of a place in the line-up than Vincent Janssen, who has started each of the last three matches in the central striker role.

Having found the net in each of those games, the Tottenham forward could prove a tempting longer shot at 7/2 (4.50) against a defence that has kept just one clean sheet in the last five competitive matches.

However, with seven goals to his name in his last seven international appearances, Arjen Robben looks like the best value bet at 16/5 (4.20) as he adds his considerable experience to that of Van Persie in a youthful Dutch team.

While his opposite number is resorting to bringing strikers in from the cold, Didier Deschamps is so spoilt for choice in attack that the continued absence of Karim Benzema is not considered an issue.

On the scoresheet in eight of his last 12 competitive appearances for Les Bleus, Antoine Griezmann is the 10/3 (4.33) favourite to get the ball rolling, or even odds (2.00) to strike anytime.

A regular starter for the national side despite regularly warming the bench at Arsenal, Olivier Giroud could offer value at those same even odds (2.00) after scoring six times in the last five matches to take his total to an impressive 27 in 64 caps.

On the verge of completing a loan move to PSG that could eventually make him the second most expensive player in the world, 18-year-old prodigy Kylian Mbappe is available at 23/20 (2.15) to score would surely be the first goal of many at senior international level.
