Man Utd news: Alan Shearer offers advice to Romelu Lukaku in wake of goal drought

ROMELU LUKAKU must be more selfish in front of goal if he is to end his barren spell in front of goal for Manchester United.

That’s according to Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer, who claims the Belgium international is drifting out of position to find the ball too much.

Lukaku couldn’t find a breakthrough for United as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea yesterday meaning he has gone seven games without netting a goal.

After a promising start to his career at Old Trafford with 10 goals in nine matches, his recent struggles have raised concern among some fans.

Jose Mourinho attempted to play down Lukaku’s current form by claiming the striker is ‘untouchable’ and wanted club supporters to get behind the 24-year-old.

It’s time to be selfish and help his team

And after failing to score yet again, Shearer believes Lukaku must act more selfish on the pitch instead of dropping deep to find the ball more.

“When you’re on a barren spell. Forget everything about going out wide, coming deep and thinking ‘I’m not getting a touch of the ball, I need to go and help out my team-mates’,” Shearer told Match of the Day 2.

“It’s time to be selfish and help his team.

“Width of the 18 yard box - that’s what he’s got to think about. Forget about going out there because he’s not going to score goals from there.

“He’s not helping anyone by going deep or out wide. Let someone else create the chances for him. Be selfish.”

Lukaku (7) is still just one goal behind Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane (8) in the Premier League top scorer’s list.
