Man City news: Pep Guardiola is trying to win the league differently to Man Utd, Chelsea - Allardyce

That is the view of former England manager Sam Allardyce, who was appearing on Goals on Sunday this morning.

Manchester City’s 7-2 win over Stoke yesterday put them out on their own at the top of the Premier League after eight games this season.

They are two points clear of rivals Manchester United, who drew 0-0 with Liverpool earlier in the day at Anfield.

City have now scored eight goals more than any other team in the top-flight and Allardyce believes Guardiola is putting far more emphasis on attack than defence, unlike previous title winners and their current rivals United and Chelsea.

I think Pep has gone the other way with the quality of player, ‘well, we’ll score more goals’

But he has warned Manchester City fans it is not a recipe that has always worked, like with Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool in 2014.

“You’re really going to have to come up with something special to stop that attack,” Allardyce said on Sky Sports.

“I think that’s the key element if he’s going to win the league.

“He’s going to (try) to win the league opposite to most managers who are born on ‘I have to have the best defensive record to win the league’.

Man City news: Pep Guardiola is putting more emphasis on attack than defence, says Allardyce

“I think Pep Guardiola has gone the other way with the quality of player, ‘well, we’ll score more goals’.

“The last manager to do that was Brendan (Rodgers) and it didn’t quite work.

“Right at the very death where they needed a clean sheet or were 3-0 up against Palace and it went to 3-3.

“But this time round with the quality of the player that they’ve got, it maybe their season.”
