Liverpool vs Man Utd: Philippe Coutinho's first-half performance was criticised by Jamie Carragher

Coutinho was playing in a front three for Liverpool for the visit of Manchester United.

That was because Sadio Mane injured his hamstring on international duty with Senegal last week.

Coutinho has been utilised amongst the Liverpool midfield so far this season and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher says it looked like he was still playing there in the first half at Anfield.

“It revolves around Philippe Coutinho," Carragher said whilst working as an analyst on the game.

Of course they miss Mane, but I think Coutinho has got to remember he’s part of a front three and stop going so deep

"He’s been playing more in the midfield three.

"He’s now part of the front three but he’s playing like he’s still part of the midfield.

"So Liverpool have only really got (Mohamed) Salah who is penetrating.

"(Roberto) Firmino comes to the ball, and the three midfield players are also very similar, they like to go to the ball, they don’t like running without it.

"So that’s why Salah has been the bright spark, the one player who can penetrate.

"That’s what they are lacking.
