Liverpool vs Man Utd: Scouts would reject Reds defenders - Merson

MANCHESTER UNITED will beat Liverpool tomorrow because the Reds’ defending is worse than that of 14 year olds, according to pundit Paul Merson.

Liverpool vs Man Utd: Paul Merson is backing the visitors to win the Premier League clash

Merson made the bizarre comment this morning on Sky Sports when previewing the huge game at Anfield.

He says the goal Liverpool conceded in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle two weeks ago would have seen 14-year-old hopefuls rejected by scouts.

The offenders were Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip, who allowed striker Joselu to run through on goal from a Jonjo Shelvey through ball and scrappily finish past the onrushing Simon Mignolet.

“The goal against Newcastle two weeks ago,” Merson said.

If two 14-year-old kids did that, on trial, they wouldn’t get called back

Paul Merson on Liverpool defending

“If that was two 14 year olds who were going on a trial at a football club and they were highly thought of and all the scouts were sitting around the pitch and they were playing and that happened, they’d never get called back again.

“I’ve never seen anything like that.

“They didn’t see danger and if you don’t see danger, you never see danger.

“You don’t pick up danger as a centre-half, it’s like a goalscorer.

Liverpool vs Man Utd: Sky Sports pundit Merson compared Liverpool's defending to children

“You’re either a goalscorer or you’re not a goalscorer.

“What happened to the two centre-halves two weeks ago, if two 14-year-old kids did that, on trial, they wouldn’t get called back.

“How good they are it wouldn’t have mattered, so that’s why I’ve got to to Manchester United (to win).”
