Arsenal and Chelsea in running to host potential George Groves vs Chris Eubank Jr clash

ARSENAL and Chelsea are reportedly both in the running to host George Groves’ potential clash against Chris Eubank Jr.

George Groves takes on Jamie Cox this weekend

Groves takes on Jamie Cox at Wembley Arena this Saturday and he will be making the first defence of his WBA super-middleweight title in the quarter-finals of the World Boxing Super Series.

Should Groves prevail, he would face Eubank Jr in the last four of the competition, as he defeated Avni Yildirim on Saturday night, and the bout could take place in either January or February.

Despite the risk of adverse weather, the fight has had no shortage of interest in terms of where it could be hosted in London.

The London Evening Standard claim Fulham is the most likely venue should Groves book his place in the semi-final.

Obviously going outside in January is difficult but on the other hand I grew up in England and I think it’s possible

Kalle Sauerland

Groves is a Chelsea fan and Stamford Bridge along with the Gunners’ Emirates Stadium are in the frame to host the potential bout.

And Kalle Sauerland, who is helping to promote the World Boxing Series, said: “The tournament dictates the dates so it has to be January or February, which also happens to be a very busy time for venues so you have to be creative with other options.

“We want as many people as possible to be able to see such a great event and that might mean taking it outdoors.

“At the moment when it comes to football grounds there are a few possibilities. We are hoping to speak to Arsenal and Brighton this week and we are waiting on Chelsea.

“We want to talk to four or five clubs but at the moment Fulham looks most realistic.

“Obviously going outside in January is difficult but on the other hand I grew up in England and I think it’s possible.

“Just put a coat on! I  think that’s a fight you could put in a lot of places — Cardiff too.”

The Standard also suggest that should Cox beat Groves, then his semi-final with Eubank Jr would be at Wembley Arena.
