Liverpool news: Daniel Sturridge should have scored against Newcastle today, says Carragher

Sturridge made his third Premier League start of the season, coming in for Roberto Firmino.

But he could not help Liverpool take all three points back to Anfield, as the Reds were held to a 1-1 draw at St James' Park.

The England international had a great chance in the second half following a mistake from Newcastle defender Ciaran Clark, but saw his shot saved by goalkeeper Rob Elliot.

Carragher says Tottenham star Harry Kane, Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata and Premier League top scorer Romelu Lukaku would have scored the opportunity.

If that’s Harry Kane, that’s a goal, Morata it’s a goal, Lukaku it’s a goal and they’re coming away with a 2-1 win

“He should (have scored),” Carragher said on Sky Sports of Daniel Sturridge.

“That’s what he’s in the team for. He’s not in the team to press, because he doesn’t press.

“He’s not in the team to penetrate in behind because he’s not that player no more, I think the amount of injuries has taken it’s toll, so we don’t see him getting behind people.

“He doesn’t really get involved a lot, so the reason he is in the team is to finish that chance. He has to score.

Liverpool news: Romelu Lukaku or Alvaro Morata would have scored Sturridge's chance, says Carragher

“Sometimes with strikers we say ‘well you’re getting the chances, start worrying when the chances don’t come’.

“And then when the chances don’t come you say ‘well I’m not getting any creativity’ and you let strikers get away with a lot really when they’re missing chances.

"That is a massive chance.

“If that’s Harry Kane, that’s a goal, Morata it’s a goal, Lukaku it’s a goal and they’re coming away with a 2-1 win.”
