Liverpool news: Reds won’t win Premier League title playing the Jurgen Klopp way - Souness

LIVERPOOL will not win the Premier League title playing under Jurgen Klopp due to his ‘obsession’ with attacking.

Klopp vents fury at Liverpool players during Spartak draw

That is the view of former Liverpool midfielder-turned-pundit Graeme Souness.

Jurgen Klopp has come under heavy criticism this season for failing to address the Reds’ defensive frailties during the summer transfer window.

The Merseyside club have conceded 11 goals in their opening six league games and sit sixth in the table ahead of their clash with Newcastle today (4:30pm).

But Souness reckons Klopp’s gung-ho style of play is to blame and has warned that will have no chance of ending their 27-year title drought unless a balance is struck.

“Some managers seem to have an obsession with attacking – and Jurgen Klopp is one of them,” Souness said

“But does that win championships? Not normally.

“Barcelona did it under Pep Guardiola, but that team was arguably the best club side football’s ever seen. I’m not sure that can be repeated anywhere, never mind in the Premier League.

“The team that wins the title tends to be balanced. They can attack and put teams to the sword when they have to, but when it comes to the big games they can also grind out results by being pragmatic.

Liverpool won't win the Premier League playing the Jurgen Klopp way - Graeme Souness

Jurgen wants his team playing with their foot to the floor for 90 minutes. I’m not sure you can win the Premier League playing the Klopp way

“Klopp wants to press high and he wants to dominate the ball — but players eventually pay the price physically for that approach.

“Liverpool look spent after an hour and, when they aren’t out of sight, they start to suffer. It always feels like Liverpool finish games hanging on when they have been in total control. The best teams pace themselves.
