West Ham Tottenham: Spurs can't catch Man Utd or Man City if they lose, says Merson

That is the view of pundit and former Arsenal forward Paul Merson.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham side are looking to bounce back from their 0-0 home draw against Swansea last Saturday.

Manchester United and Manchester City play later (3pm) against Southampton and Crystal Palace respectively.

Merson says Tottenham would be out of the title race if they fail to win today and United and City both collect three points.

So for me it’s a must-win game for Tottenham, must-win game

“For me it would be (uncatchable),” Merson said on Sky Sports.

“People would look at that and go ‘oh there’s so many games left’ but that will be seven games gone.

“If I would have turned round to you at the start of the season and I said ‘I’ll have Man City and you have Tottenham but you’ve got to give me eight points head start’ you’d have no chance.

“You’d have no chance and that’s with 38 games. For me, this is what I like about (Jose) Mourinho.

Man Utd backed to win Premier League by former manager Moyes

“When Mourinho wins the league he starts off on fire. He don’t worry about ‘oh there’s 30 games left or 28, 29’ he starts off well.

“If you look at every time he wins the league it’s very, very rare his teams don’t start off well like Manchester United have.

“So for me it’s a must-win game for Tottenham, must-win game.”

Harry Kane scored twice at the London Stadium as Spurs won 3-2, despite having Serge Aurier sent off.
