Arsenal news: Arsene Wenger would have been successful at Man Utd - Stan Collymore

ARSENE WENGER would have been successful at Manchester United.

Ian Wright: Arsenal players have lost faith in Arsene Wenger

That is the view of former Liverpool striker turned pundit Stan Collymore.

Wenger was approached about the chance to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2002.

But the Frenchman opted against a move to Old Trafford as they did not match Arsenal’s values.

However, Collymore reckons would have been a good fit at United and would have brought in another version of the Invincibles to the club.

“The thought that Arsene Wenger might have succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2002 is an interesting one,” Collymore wrote in his Daily Mirror column.

I believe he’d have been successful for five or six years because he’d have fallen into line with what the club are about

“And I believe he’d have been successful for five or six years because he’d have fallen into line with what the club are about.

“He’d have played fast-flowing, attractive football, he’d have brought in United’s version of the Invincibles and he’d have definitely brought through youngsters."

But Collymore admits Wenger is different to Sir Alex as he is not as ruthless in his decision-making.

“The key difference between Fergie and Wenger is that the Scot was ruthless in his decision-making and consistently hired No.2s who’d challenge him, who’d say no, who’d keep him lively,” Collymore added.

“Wenger has never done that.”
